Guy Ritchie and his former wife, Madonna Louise Ciccone who is a singer and actress adopted David Banda from the orphanage. It was David’s father who sent him to the orphanage after he lost his mother shortly after his birth.
At that time, Madonna had a program she titled ‘Raising Malawi’. It was during this program that she adopted the baby albeit amid several difficulties. Madonna later succeeded in adopting the boy.

Adoption and Birth
David was born in Lipunga, Malawi to Yohane and Marita Banda on the 24th of September 2005. His parents were a poor farmer couple. His mother died soon after his birth and his father had to send him to an orphanage when he was not able to take care of him.
The orphanage was in Mchinji district Malawi and was named ‘Home of Hope Orphan Care Center’. David had health problems at the age of thirteen, he had pneumonia, tuberculosis, and malaria.
Madonna, a co-founder of the organization called ‘Raising Malawi’ was present in Malawi for the charity program. Madonna saw David in the orphanage and decided to adopt the boy.
Madonna listed with the Malawi government on the 10th of October 2006 to adopt the baby. After getting custody of the boy, she took him along with her, and this created many controversies around that time.
There were criticisms from here and there and notably from some human rights group. They believed she succeeded in adopting the baby because she was a celebrity.
The issue did not stop there, some people went ahead to stop Madonna’s jet on the Lilongwe Airport runway in Malawi when she wanted to fly out with David.
The Malawian law stated that prospective parents of adopted children must live in the country for at least eighteen months before adoption. So, people pointed finger at Malawi for using her status as a celebrity to fasten the adoption process.
Truly, Madonna did not fulfill the requirements of this law as she did not reside in Malawi for the stipulated number of months before the adoption. This made some newspapers to accuse her of kidnapping the boy from the orphanage.
Other people also objected that the boy was not an orphan since his father was still alive. Yohane, the father granted interviews to many media agents where he made contradictory remarks. He was not clear about the adoption idea. Yohane probably thought he was handing over David to Madonna only to better the boy’s future and education.
Besides, it was at that time that Madonna’s divorce from her ex-husband Guy Richie was looming. The divorce involved Madonna fighting for the custody of Rookie, her biological son.
All these casted uncertainties in the minds of the Malawian authorities and Yohane Banda. Some even doubted if Madonna could raise a child properly.
The case was eventually taken to court and Madonna won, making David officially her son. Madonna modified the boy’s name to David Banda Mwale Ciccone Ritchie. This new name reflected Madonna’s last name, her adopted and biological father’s name (Ritchie), and the name of David’s birthplace.
David’s New Family and Life
David got a private room in Madonna Marylebone townhouse, he also got so many luxuries. David has 2 older siblings, Rocco Richie (Madonna’s son with her ex-husband Guy Ritchie), and Lourdes Leon (Madonna’s daughter with actor Carlos Leon whom she once has a relationship with).
After the finalization of her divorce with Guy Ritchie in 2008, Madonna relocated to New York and took David along with her. So, David often accompanied her to various games and places.
In 2009, Madonna once again adopted Mercy James and twin sisters Estere and Stella Ciccone in 2017, all from Malawi. Yohane, David’s biological father later remarried and gave birth to Dingiswayo, David’s biological half-brother.
